What makes something news?

News is something that informs a large group of people and can impact the lives of many. The news can be exciting and happy, like when the royal family introduces a new baby to the world. News can also be scary and sad, which is what we have been experiencing lately in the wake of the Coronavirus.

We all have news in our own lives, but news in journalism and in the media needs to be something that doesn’t just impact one or two people. News is composed of stories that impact a multitude of people and has the potential to distribute important information that people may need. Therefore, news must be measured in importance and have an understand of who or what is going to be affected.

News is all about informing people on certain topics that can impact their lives. Whether it is a negative or positive impact, the news helps people better understand how, why, when and even where something is occurring.

For example, the Coronavirus has been one of the hottest news topics in 2020. The news that has been shared about the pandemic has always told us how the virus is spreading, when and where people are becoming sick and more. The Coronavirus is “news-worthy” because it affects people all over the world and can have grave implications on life as we know it.

Overall, if something is news, it means that something that has the potential to reach a large amount of people and have numerous effects on their lives — good and bad.
